| HE’S NOT “HIM” ______________ by Craig Abernethy Copyright 2008 Cast of Characters Kenzie: An attractive, aware, and bright woman (late 20s to late 30s). Wears the 2020 edition of a "little black dress” with large, retro style jewelry (e.g. large red, white, and black plastic bangles). Josh: A fit and handsome man (late 20s to late 30s and a year or two older than Kenzie). Wears a classy long sleeve shirt and expensive pleated slacks with dark shoes and socks. Malloy: A tanned, somewhat “rugged” man (Josh’s age). Wears dressy “traveler’s” clothing and expensive “walking shoes.” SETTING: One of the nicer corners of the not too distant future: the terrace of an up- scale urban condo complex. It is Spring 2020. AT RISE: Taped party conversation, laughs, clinking of glasses, music, and traffic noises are heard as the lights come up. Kenzie and Josh are Right facing Off Stage and laughing at a private joke. Malloy is Down and Left facing Down Stage and “taking in the view.” Kenzie and Josh hold oversized martini glasses containing brightly colored drinks and Malloy holds a bottle of mineral water. When the lights are at half Kenzie and Josh turn to Center and Josh sees Malloy, takes Kenzie’s arm, and they greet Malloy at Center, shake hands, and begin chatting. Kenzie speaks when the lights are full. KENZIE So you know Josh from Higgs, Beale, Santucci? MALLOY Started the same day. JOSH Dude, memory! KENZIE Where do you work now? MALLOY I’ve been away for a while. KENZIE You look great! MALLOY Thanks. JOSH Not another rehab-er? KENZIE You didn’t face your demons and get all “good” did you? JOSH Get all “spiritual?” (Kenzie and Josh laugh) MALLOY I wouldn’t say so, no. KENZIE Whew! JOSH Dude, seriously: you look mellowed out! MALLOY Thanks. KENZIE We’re just beginning to slow down. JOSH Madhouse city this whole year. KENZIE New schools! JOSH Elton’s six; Colette’s four. (To Kenzie) Right? KENZIE Right on! (To Malloy) The whole thing with Josh’s dad… JOSH You remember my dad? We… played golf…? MALLOY Ball game. Braves were in town. JOSH What a mind! Dude, ballgame! MALLOY (Smiles) Good guy;… lot of fun. JOSH Yeah, total boomer dude! Low fat, high fiber, exercise… KENZIE “Erectus,” daily! JOSH Three wives. KENZIE Three! JOSH Mom. Phyllis. We miss her. KENZIE Cancer. JOSH Tragic. KENZIE And Travinka’s number three. JOSH One time Croatian porn queen! KENZIE Washed up at twenty-eight. JOSH Career over. KENZIE Tragic. MALLOY How is he? JOSH Serious case of calendaritis; got very old.
